Description
Ernest Chausson died suddenly in a bicycle crash. Among the various projects he left behind were some orchestral overtures, a violin sonata, a second symphony and a string quartet. He had finished the first two movements of the quartet and was nearly at the end of the third when the accident happened. Fellow composer Vincent d'Indy completed the third movement and it is for this reason it seems appropriate for the Chilingirian Quartet to have paired Chausson's quartet with one of d'Indy's own efforts in the genre on this recording. D'Indy, a pupil of Cesar Franck's pupils, completed three string quartets and (like Chausson) left one incomplete upon his death.

Chausson: String Quartet Op.35; d'Indy: String Quartet No.1 is a 1999 Hyperion Records recording featuring the Chilingirian Quartet as they play Ernest Chausson and Vincent D'Indy. Roger Nichols has written the Music notes. Splendid performance by the Chilingirian Quartet. Highly recommended. 5/5.
